So, how can I help you to find your way around here?
...
Some interesting(?) and historical information about this Web site:
This site officially opened on 1-Jan-1999.
The site used to be spread around on different 'free' locations.
That includes CompuServe (2 sites),
GeoCities,
Xoom,
and a few more spots in the Web.
Finally,
I just had it with banners, watermarks, limited ftp connections, disk quotas etc.
That's why I decided to create my private site.
That's when schaffter.com was born.
Between Jan-1999 and May-2004,
the site was hosted by
SoftCom.
Since SoftCom is a Canadian company,
the site was physically located on a server in Canada.
Furthermore,
I was limited to 50MB disk, anonymous ftp but no shell account.
The price was interesting, though.
In May-2004,
the site moved to
Bytemark,
a UK based company.
I fell for the phrase "Full root access on your own dedicated host".
And I have so far had no reason to regret that decision.
The guys managing the host service are excellent!
I have my own User Mode Linux virtual computer on the public Internet.
There was a choise of Linux based operating systems,
so I chose
Gentoo Linux
in my virtual machine.
As a result,
I compile, recompile and configure the software that I chose to have installed.
The only limitation under User Mode Linux is that I cannot re-compile my own kernels,
nor can I load any kernel modules.
I have a set of pre-compiled kernels to chose from,
provided by the
Bytemark
administration.
So far, they all work perfectly well.
Most of my pages assume that you have a decently modern browser.
You are also supposed to have JavaScript enabled.
Some pages will also require that Java is enabled,
to give you some value.
