Introduction

Pentaho is the name of an open source software collection that includes packages for Business Intelligence solutions, ETL software, reporting software, etc.

It is written in Java and thus it is virtually platform independent. The most important platforms are probably Microsoft Windows and different flavors of UNIX/Linux.

The current release requires the host system to have the Sun Java version 1.5 or higher installed. It is likely that it will work with other flavors of Java as well, but that is not officially supported. (To what extent an open source software solution is officially supported.)

Enterprise Edition vs Free edition

The Enterprise Edition comes bundled with a support package, more detailed documentation and (for some modules) additional functionality.

The free edition is a community supported edition. It has a pretty active community with both an on-line forum and a Wiki site.
